History: Derek WIllows was a short-tempered youth with an active imagination and brilliant mind. He did well in school when he chose to apply himself. However, he lacked the discipline to truly excel. Money always slipped through his fingers and he sometimes worked two jobs to support his spending habits. When he went to college, Willows decided to study law. He felt a career as a lawyer would provide him with the money he desired. Unfortunately, the more he earned, the more he spent.

Practicing law was not enough for Derek Willows. His mind enjoyed the absolute nature of science more than the ambiguity of law. He read an article in a scientific journal about the theoretical manipulation of gravity and was captivated by it. He spent considerable resources to pursue his own research in this area. He made more progress than he ever dreamed was possible. He created a device to manipulate gravity waves. At first, it was the size of a large television set. He eventually miniaturized his gravity manipulator enough to include it in a pair of portable wrist bands.

Willows decided to pursue a sideline as a vigilante against crime. He assumed the name Gravitron, an obvious choice given his gravity wrist bands. However, he felt that he needed some firepower should he face some real danger. He created a sonic disrupter pistol for just such occasions.

When the Protectors moved into the New York City Executive building for their headquarters, Gravitron offered his services to the group. They made him a member of the team and he distinguished himself fighting the terrorist group Armageddon and later Doctor Overhead. Unfortunately, the Protectors learned of Gravitron's volatile nature during their trip to the Colorado Rockies. While they tracked down a missing Iron Man, the Protectors faced Mandarin and several other villains for hire. Along with Firephase, Gravitron was captured. He developed a deep-seated hatred for Blizzard, one of the mercenary super-villains, and vowed to kill him on sight. After he was freed, he got his chance. The Protectors encountered Blizzard once again and rendered him unconscious. Gravitron refused to stop his attacks on Blizzard, hoping to kill him. In a show of solidarity, the Blitz joined in as well. The Protectors stopped them before they committed murder and immediately banned them from the group. However, Gravitron and Blitz then turned their attacks against the Protectors. The duo was subdued and turned over to the authorities. Gravitron is currently serving a sentence in a federal prison.
