History: Wade Collins was an officer in the United States Air Force. He was involved in a military experiment to improve human endurance by genetic manipulation through pharmacology. Although he initially had reservations about participating in the alpha test phase, he eventually consented to become the first test subject. "A guinea pig is more like it," he thought. He knew that a great deal more testing was needed before human test subjects should be considered. The military brass were anxious to see results, however, and Collins proceeded against his better judgement.

They injected Collins with the experimental drugs and waited anxiously for any changes. As he was transported to another facility, his plane was struck by lightning in mid-flight. Prior to this, he really didn't feel all that different. Something about the lightning strike caused a transformation in him, however. Over the next few days, Collins began to experience a metamorphosis that couldn't be explained entirely by the injections. His strength grew rapidly to superhuman levels. His recuperative ability increased beyond normal human levels. Ironically, his endurance was the one thing that did not improve. When the desired results in him did not surface, the project was labeled a failure and was disbanded. Collins hid most of his changes from the project. He retired from the Air Force and moved to the country, taking his secrets with him.

Wade Collins tried to live a normal life but his newfound powers kept getting in the way. He felt connected to nature and was sensitive to sonic vibrations around him. At first, he thought he was going crazy. Eventually, he realized that he could communicate with the animals around him. After the public arrest of Blitz and Gravitron, the Protectors found themselves down two members and in a public relations nightmare. Collins decided that he could make a suitable replacement and joined the Protectors as Sonar, keeping his own identity a secret.

As a new member of the Protectors, Sonar proved his worth in a battle with Electro. With Alpha Flight unavailable, he also participated on a mission to Canada to aid our neighbors to the north. There, the Protectors faced the danger of multiple synthetic Hulks. Sonar attacked with fury in battle but was eventually knocked unconscious by one of the Hulks. After the battle was over, the group tended to their wounded. Unfortunately for Sonar, it was too late. He was dead.
Height: 6' 2"
Weight: 210 lbs.
Eyes: Brown
Hair: Brown
Strength Level: Sonar possessed superhuman strength, which enabled him to lift (press) approximately 10 tons.
Known superhuman powers: Sonar's primary power was his control over sonic energy. He had the power to amplify or dampen sonic waves, which he did for a variety of purposes. His mastery was sufficient that he was able to use sound as a weapon against his enemies. Sonar could heal and regenerate at a rate several orders of magnitude faster than a normal human. He had the ability to actually communicate with animals. Animals viewed him as friendly and would usually do his bidding, if he requested. The exact origin of Sonar's powers remained a mystery. It is possible that the experimental drugs were the explanation for his incredible powers. It is also possible that the lightning strike served as a catalyst to activate some latent mutant abilities. Perhaps it was some combination of both. With Sonar's death, the world will never know.
Abilities: Sonar was a valued Air Force officer with knowledge of military protocol and access to some top secret information. He was a trained scientist proficient in genetics and geology.
Weapons: Sonar usually equipped a small projectile weapon that he affixed to his right forearm. It delivered a small needle-like dart that could incapacitate an opponent. Typically, it might stun or even render unconscious an average-sized human.
