History: Dr. Jonathan Thorpe had already earned a medical degree when he decided to pursue advanced graduate studies in genetics. Thorpe had earned a reputation as a man with a capable but unstable mind. He was a risk taker, frequently to the point of recklessness. His carelessness was often dangerous to himself and those around him. This did not endear him to others. Therefore, he was somewhat of a loner and enjoyed the solitude of his scientific pursuits.

Unbeknownst to him at the time, Jonathan Thorpe was born a mutant. Once Dr. Thorpe discovered the true nature of his mutant genes, he became obsessed with unlocking their potential. With a maniacal focus, he poured himself into his research. He experimented on local pets and used strays as test subjects. Finally, he created an agent that he hoped would react with his own DNA and accelerate any hidden potential locked therein. He injected himself and endured the agonizing waves that swept across his body. He could endure the pain, he thought, if it resulted in his desired goal. He was not disappointed. He felt different—stronger and powerful. That day, Doctor Darkforce was born.

When Blast and the Cyborg decided to create a new team of super-heroes in New York City, they recruited Dr. Darkforce as an original member. These crime-fighting super-heroes called themselves the Protectors. Dr. Darkforce was a key contributor as the Protectors defeated Dr. Octopus and his Octodroid. As the city's saviors, they were the toast of New York. The peace and quiet didn't last long. The Armageddon terrorist organization launched a terror operation against the city. The Protectors cornered some of the terrorists along with several hostages at the Fisk Building. In an attempt to incapacitate the terrorists, Dr. Darkforce unleashed Darkforce energy upon the entire room. The terrorist plot was stopped but there were casualties. Four members of Armageddon and one hostage died as a result of Dr. Darkforce's attack. Racked with guilt over the deaths, Dr. Darkforce announced that he was leaving the Protectors.

Dr. Darkforce kept out of the public eye for several years. However, when the Leader threatened the safety of the Earth itself with his orbital space lasers, Dr. Darkforce joined up with his former comrades to stop him. After the Leader was defeated, the new Protectors were formed with the same line-up as the original Protectors: Blast, Cyborg, Dr. Darkforce, Firephase, and Tsunami.
