History: Born in Hong Kong and raised in London, James T. Dalton showed signs of mutant abilities at a very young age. Although limited at first, his powers grew through his teen years. Although kept secret for much of his youth, his innate control over electrical energy was difficult to hide entirely. By early adulthood, he was persecuted by a vocal minority at the technical school he attended. He moved to the United States and hoped to join the X-Men. They had no need for another member at the time so Dalton joined the Protectors as Lightning Lord.

The Protectors had no prejudice against mutants and gladly welcomed Lightning Lord to the group. Lightning Lord responded by contributing greatly as the Protectors faced the Leader and his minions. He proved himself to be one of the team's most able combatants. Unfortunately, the Protectors faced a great deal of turmoil at that time. Firebolt had been recently elected as the team's chairman. However, he was killed by the Rhino shortly thereafter. Firephase was put in charge afterwards. That decision never sat well with Lightning Lord. He frequently disagreed with Firephase and often challenged his decisions. Also, Lightning Lord frequently clashed with Knight Warrior, the team's newest member.

Lightning Lord became more and more irritable and uncooperative. He constantly argued with other team members. He attacked Gary Thompson, injuring him enough to send him to St. Arbogast Hospital. He even shocked Firephase at Protectors HQ. After Firephase ceded leadership to Cyborg, Cyborg's first action was to remove Lightning Lord from the group. Furious at Firephase, Lightning Lord finally snapped. He stalked Firephase and attacked him at his apartment. Firephase escaped and alerted the other Protectors. Lightning Lord went to the hospital room of Gary Thompson. He grabbed Thompson and hurled him through the closed window of his fifth-story room like a human javelin. As Lightning Lord made his escape, he encountered Blast and Densitron not far from Gary Thompson's lifeless body. The duo defeated Lightning Lord and knocked him unconscious. Blast delivered the final, fatal blows to Lightning Lord with his billy club.
