History: Thomas Delantte was a promising bio-geneticist. He worked for several companies before landing a job on a top-secret government contract that changed his life forever. The U.S. military had recovered some wreckage from a crashed UFO. The technology was of unknown origin but almost certainly was not from this world. The government desired to learn as much about it as possible. Among the shards of material from the craft was an amazing find. They discovered a small glowing item about ten inches across. It was egg-shaped, feather light, and seemingly indestructible. Its purpose was a mystery that they hoped to soon unravel. Thomas Delantte was soon assigned to this project.

The prevailing theory was that this item was not only technological in nature but biological as well. As expected, progress was slow unlocking the secrets of "the egg," as it was known. One evening, Dr. Delantte was investigating the chemical composition of the egg when he had a most amazing experience. While in physical contact with the egg, it spoke to him. The communication was not verbal. He heard it in his mind. More accurately, he felt it. It was like he had joined with another being—mind, body, and soul. Although all of the secrets were not revealed to him, he learned plenty. The true nature of the egg was almost beyond human comprehension. In simplistic terms, it contained the essence of another sentient being and also provided power for the craft that housed it. The vessel was failing, however. Within days, the energy contained within would be lost forever. The alien made Dr. Delantte an intriguing offer: Absorb the remaining energy but only if he would use the immense power for constructive purposes. His mind raced. He was simultaneously excited and frightened. His conscience told him to save the life form. Unfortunately, there was no way to be sure that a human body could survive what was under consideration. It didn't take long for his decision. In his mind, he answered "yes." He feared the process might be painful. It was not. Instead, he felt an exhilarating rush as the energy flowed through his body. The sense of time and space was momentarily lost to him. Moments later, he regained his senses and knew that his life had just taken a very dramatic turn.

Thomas Delantte looked down at the egg, which was now devoid of any luminescence. He felt the alien's presence inside him but direct communication was no longer possible. In the days and weeks that followed, Dr. Delantte discovered some of the otherworldly powers that were now at his command. He could generate and project unbelievable amounts of raw energy. He had the ability to communicate with animals and even exert control over them, if he so desired. Using but a simple touch, he could disrupt the nervous system of another living being, causing temporary paralysis. Finally, he realized that he drew strength from the sun itself. While exposed to solar energy, he felt rejuvenated and could heal at an accelerated pace.

The details of what happened on that transformative night were never shared with anyone in the government. As far as they knew, the egg was damaged in the crash and had finally died. Dr. Delantte felt he needed to live up to the promise he had made. He wanted to use his powers for good. So he abruptly quit the project and adopted the identity of Life Force, a super-hero. As Life Force, he hoped that he could make a profound difference in the world. He sought out the Protectors, based in New York City. They accepted him as a member-in-training. Unfortunately, Life Force had an all too brief career with the Protectors. He fought alongside them in the so-called "Gang Wars." In an intense battle with Goliath, Life Force was killed by the gigantic super-villain.
