History: Gary Thompson was a gifted athlete that had a remarkable high school varsity career in football and wrestling. His size and strength earned him nicknames like "the bull" and "tank" from his admiring peers. But Thompson was not just brawn without brains. He was a devoted student who enjoyed the classroom every bit as much as playing sports. He particularly enjoyed the science lab and voraciously read any science book he could get his hands on. Thompson loved to experiment and tinker. His dream was to someday become a professional research scientist with a modern science lab at his disposal. He went on to college and studied engineering and physics. His excellent grades and obvious talents easily landed him a job at a military contractor. There, he improved on several of the company's body armor designs and was viewed as a rising star. However, Thompson became disillusioned with his position when he was assigned to work on a new weapons system that he viewed as unethical and possibly even illegal. Tired of the corporate world, he followed his conscience and quit a promising career.

Gary Thompson had no intention of giving up the scientific research that he loved so much. He planned to design a battle suit far beyond anything the military had dreamed of for its various super-soldier projects. After several years of hard work and numerous prototypes, he was finally satisfied. The Mark I suit was ready. Inspired by the super-hero Iron Man, Thompson assumed a super-identity while in his suit and kept his own identity private. He decided to call himself the Annihilator, a name as fierce-some as his appearance. That would certainly strike fear in the hearts of criminals!

As the Annihilator patrolled New York City, he eventually crossed paths with the Protectors. Introductions were exchanged and the conversation turned to possible Protectors' membership for the Annihilator. The group was open to the idea but they knew that his violent name would be a public relations nightmare. They accepted him on the condition that he must take a new name. He agreed. From that moment on, he was Knight Warrior, member of the Protectors.

Knight Warrior joined the Protectors as they investigated some strange events at the OFA school. Unfortunately, Gary Thompson's life quickly turned into a nightmare. While working on his armor at Protectors HQ one evening, he was attacked by a man in a ski mask. Even without his battle suit, Thompson was no pushover. He brawled with the intruder and was clearly getting the better of him. Panicked in near defeat, Major Darkstar enveloped Thompson in Darkforce and knocked him unconscious. This set off a chain of events that caused a great deal of internal strife. The Protectors were brought to the brink of ruin. Knight Warrior brought his accusations against Major Darkstar to the rest of the group. Major Darkstar's whereabouts were unknown and he was not around to defend his reputation. The Knight Warrior was fed up with recent events and left for a vacation. When he returned from his vacation, he found his armor missing. It had been stolen. Thompson confronted the Protectors about his missing Knight Warrior battle suit but they had no information to share. Knight Warrior wanted Major Darkstar removed from the group. The team was divided. Firephase, the team's leader, knew Major Darkstar's volatile nature and suspected he was lying. Lightning Lord sided with the veteran member over the new recruit. Tensions mounted between Gary Thompson and Lightning Lord and a fight between them erupted. Thompson suffered injuries and was taken to St. Arbogast Hospital for treatment. Relationships started to mend when Knight Warrior's armor was returned. Major Darkstar and Knight Warrior exchanged apologies and agreed to put the incident behind them.

Lightning Lord was frustrated with all of the turmoil since Knight Warrior joined the team. He was also furious with Firephase for his position in the matter. Lightning Lord attacked Firephase but did not seriously injure him. He followed that with an attack on Gary Thompson, who lay helpless in his hospital bed. Thompson was killed as Lightning Lord flung him through the closed window of his fifth-story room onto the street below.

Abilities: Gary Thompson was an inventor with an incredible talent for designing portable weapons systems and personal defensive gear. Although Thompson was a big burly man who frequently engaged in strength-training, he was easily 40 times stronger as Knight Warrior in his battle suit.
