History: At a very young age, Rick Marshall exhibited an intellect that is seen perhaps once in a generation. He absorbed every subject like a sponge, aced every test, and quickly surpassed his teachers' ability to challenge him in the classroom. He entered an accelerated learning program and graduated high school early. College provided an opportunity to expand his studies but there was still little challenge. Marshall earned a Masters Degree and Ph.D in a mere two years. His interest in formal academia waning, he decided to engage in his own private research.

Rick Marshall set out to tweak and improve practically anything and everything he could get his hands on. When there was no device to accomplish a given task, he simply invented one. His love of driving prompted him to build his own performance automobiles. Although he was amazingly gifted, he realized that humans utilize only a fraction of their available brain power. He sought to deepen his understanding of the human brain and harness any untapped potential. He became focused on research into telekinesis, the ability to move objects with the power of the mind. Marshall discovered that this potential existed within the typical human brain. However, the ability was so limited that it was practically undetectable. He created a mechanism to amply a person's limited telekinetic ability and make it useful.

A thrill-seeker by nature, Rick Marshall was bored and looked for a new direction in his life. Living in New York City, he had seen the headlines about a new super-hero group, the Protectors. Marshall thought the only thing separating super-heroes and himself was an adequate supply of the proper technology. He refitted his sports car to make it battle-ready. He created a crossbow capable of firing ultra-destructive bolts. Finally, he donned a helmet with his telekinetic amplifier. Firebolt was born!

Firebolt joined the Protectors shortly after they had become the heroes of New York City by defeating Dr. Octopus and his Octodroid. He was a member of the Protectors at a time when they faced some heavy adversaries: Cascade, Mastermind, and their arch-enemy, the Leader. Firebolt worked well with the Protectors and often teamed up with Firephase. In fact, he was so respected that the Protectors elected him as chairman and leader of the group. However, he also took opportunities to fight crime on his own. While stopping a petty theft, he fired an exploding crossbow bolt at the thief, killing him. That death haunted him until his final days. Because of it, he developed non-lethal stun bolts.

During the Protectors second encounter with the Leader, a battle was fought on a New York City pier. The Leader had sent Rhino, Thunderball, and Beetle to defeat the super-group. Rhino drove Firebolt into the pier, nearly killing him. Rhino proceeded to use Firebolt as a hostage, threatening death if the Protectors did not halt their attacks. Firebolt refused to be used as a pawn and told his comrades to fight on. Rhino responded by coldly carrying out his threat and killing Firebolt.

Abilities: Firebolt was one of the world's greatest scientific geniuses. He possessed an inventive mind that was particularly talented in weapons design. It was from one of his inventions that he got his name: Firebolt, from the crossbow that he designed. Firebolt discovered a way to amplify a person's natural psychic powers. He designed a helmet that contained a telekinetic stimulator, which boosted his own natural abilities to a much greater level. With his helmet, Firebolt was able to lift almost 800 pounds telekinetically.

Firebolt was also a talented automobile driver and mechanic.
Weapons: Firebolt's primary weapon was his crossbow. It was constructed of a steel alloy-graphite blend of his own specifications that made it extremely strong yet light (only 6 lbs.) His crossbow was designed to provide great power and extreme accuracy, even at very long ranges. He designed special exploding heads for his magnesium alloy bolts. The heads contained a composite nitro-plastic explosive that detonated on impact. The resulting blast was similar to the impact from an exploding heavy artillery shell. Firebolt also developed non-lethal stun bolts for incapacitating opponents. Firebolt's crossbow is currently in the hands of the Leader.

Firebolt added a weapon to his custom sports car. He built a retractable roof-mounted flamethrower that could be quickly raised or lowered.
